Z-Max Surveying System Operation and Applications Manual

Attach Max-RF Adapter

Attach the Max-RF Adapter to the top of the GPS Receiver Module. Insert the 
Max-RF Adapter into the antenna receptacle at the top of the GPS Receiver 
Module. 

Attach Cable to Range Pole RF Adapter

Connect the Max-RF cable between the Range Pole RF Adapter and the 
Max-RF Adapter. Make sure that the connectors are correctly attached and 
check that the cable connections are secure. 

RTK Survey Preparation

Compute the GPS Antenna Instrument Height (HI) 

Remember that measurements of satellite data are made at the center (horizontally 
and vertically) of the GPS antenna. The HI allows the computed position of the 
antenna center to be transferred to the survey mark on the ground. It’s critical that the 
height of the antenna above the ground (HI) is computed accurately. 

Because of the design of the Z-Max System the HI can always be a constant. This 
helps you completely eliminate antenna measurement error. To compute the HI with a 
fixed-height survey pole, simply add the height of the pole and the height of the 
components on the pole to get the total HI. 

Power Up Rover System

Power up the system by pressing the power button on the front panel of the GPS 
Receiver Module. Turn on the handheld computer using the power button on the 
keyboard. The radios and the GSM Module will be powered when the data links are 
configured. Check that all components are powered up. 

Configure Rover Receiver to Function as RTK Rover

This task is usually accomplished using the Field Application software running on the 
handheld computer. However, the front panel display can be used for rover 
configuration if necessary. 

Configure the Rover by performing the following steps:

1. Set the receiver to RTK Rover mode. 
2. Inform the receiver which data format will be transmitted from the base 

receiver.
