Appendix F Serial Communications Overview

Adapters and Cables

Several hardware items are needed for attaching PCs to various Particle Measuring 
Systems instruments. Not all the items are required all the time; however, having all 
the items shown will provide a reasonably complete serial connection tool suite.

USB Serial Port Adapter

Newer computers (especially laptops) no longer include a serial port. 

USB to Serial adapters are available to resolve this issue. Particle Measuring Systems 
has P/N 1000023262 (see 

Figure F-1

).

USB driver for Windows

Windows machines will require a driver to be installed for the USB serial adaptor. The 
drivers are specific to the model of adaptor used and operating system installed. 
Incorrect drivers can occasionally be a problem. If the adaptor does not operate 
correctly, the driver is usually at fault.
