must be positioned with the lip facing outward. The bearing seal is positioned in this fashion to
exclude contaminants.
NOTE:
Lip
seal must be square to housing and lip should be pre-lubricated
with oil.
f. Slide the outboard bearing housing over the shaft and outboard bearing. Assemble retaining ring to
the bearing housing on F4Hl frame using lock washers (5-917-4) and screws (5904-9). Assemble
snap ring on F4G 1 and F4J 1 frames. Make sure the beveled face on the snap ring is away from
the bearing. Be sure the snap ring does not cover oil return hole on the bearing housing.
g. Press lip seal (5-177-3) into inboard bearing cap (5-018-3) so that the seal lip is directed away
from the frame.
NOTE:
Lip seal must be square to housing and lip should be pre-lubri-
cated with oil. Press the bearing cap into the frame.
h. Coat adjusting nut (5-032-4) and bearing housing threads (5-025-4) with thread compound. Screw
the adjusting nut onto the bearing housing. Adjusting nut face should be about 2.3 mm above
bearing housing face. Bore on adjusting nut without threads must be toward coupling.
i. Place "O" ring (5-914-4) in bearing housing groove. Then carefully insert shaft assembly into
frame. Leave gap between faces of the bearing housing and frame (approximately 2.3mm). Insert
bearing housing screws (5-904-4) and lockwashers (5-917-4). Do not tighten screws. Assembly
deflectors (5-024-3 and 5024-4) at both ends of frame.
Wet end
Packed Stuffing Box:
a. Place stuffing box cover (6-036-3) on a table or workbench with the stuffing box opening up. Place
shaft sleeve (6- 009-0) with hook end down, in stuffing box.
b. Assemble packing base ring (6-152-0). In bottom of stuffing box insert three (3) rings of packing
(6-924-0), seal cage (6-013-0), two rings of packing and gland (6-014-0). Packing joints should be
staggered to prevent excessive leakage. Pull gland retaining nuts to finger tightness. The last ring of
packing may not fit into the stuffing box until the packing gets compressed in service. (See Section
VI, D, 1 for further information).
c. Assemble two studs (1-908-0), which secure the stuffing, box to frame adaptor. Slide stuffing box
assembly over the shaft. Place washer (1-917 -9) and tighten nuts (1-903-0). Tighten gland nuts
after final adjustment only.
Mechanical Seal with Std. Stuff Box or Oversize Seal Chamber: (Single John Crane Type I illustrated).
a. Press mechanical seal stationary seat into gland.
Slide the gland with gasket on the shaft. Position the seal rotating assembly on the shaft sleeve
using the seal manufacturer's instruction and dimensions from pages 25A & 25B. Tighten all
setscrews. Slip sleeve assembly over the shaft.
b. Assemble two studs (1-908-0) which secure the stuffing box to frame adaptor. Slide stuffing box
over the shaft. Place washer (1-917 -9) and tighten nuts (1-903-0). Tighten gland nuts after final
impeller adjustment only.
Dynamic Seal Parts
(Used with oversize stuffing box only).
a. For frame F4Gl and F4Hl with single lip seal, press lip seal (6-380-0) into Dynamic Seal
housing
(6-391-0). Be sure lip seal is flush with outside face of the housing and not cocked.
For double lip seal arrangement press second lip seal into housing. Be sure lip seal is flush with
