1.2 Installation/preparation
The UMS100/120 components and control PC are also referred to as network elements in the following,
in accordance with ARGUS nomenclature. Before the actual configuration of these network elements
(UMS100/120 and control PC) can begin, the type of connection must be determined. Therefore it is
strongly recommended to enter the names, IP addresses, modem telephone numbers and other access
parameters such as user names and passwords, etc into a corresponding table. Only then can the
configuration of the network elements take place smoothly and enable communication.
Allocating IP addresses is essential for the network elements to be able to communicate clearly in the
network.
The definition of IP addresses in the private address range will not be discussed here in any detail.
There are explanations in the corresponding literature (e.g. using the Internet at Wikipedia:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hauptseite or according to RFC 1918, go directly to
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1918.txt).
If more than one UMS100/120 is operating in the network, the configuration must take place before it is
connected to the network (LAN/WAN), as all UMS100/120 are set with a factory default address
(192.168.0.31).
One such configuration table is attached in
appendix A
which is filled in with several stations and the
accompanying parameters as an example.
This or the UMS100/120 to be connected is/are to be installed and connected to the power supply in
accordance with the
"Mechanical Installation Manual"
. In the case of a LAN/WAN connection, the
UMS100/120 must be configured before with regards to the address.
The main office must be accessible at all times and supplied with the appropriate equipment for set-up
and operating a standard PC with keyboard, mouse and a printer.
Depending on the type of UMS100/120 connection, suitable telecommunication lines must be available.
This includes LAN/WAN access and/or analogue telephone lines for at least one, but usually two
modems. GSM module as modem can also be used alternatively. In this way the main office also has a
"wireless" connection.
A standard PC is suitable as a control PC equipped with a Pentium IV processor, 512 MB memory, at
least 40 GB hard drive, CD or DVD-RW drive and an adequate number of RS232 ports (for external
modems) or PCI card slots (for internal modems). At least one free USB connector must be available
for the USB hardlock.
