Activity 9 - Propulsion and Auxiliary Systems
Isolation box
The isolation box contains 19 circuit breakers and two
electronic isolators. One isolator is used for coupling the
port and starboard battery banks, the other is used for the
trim/tilt capsize unit which via the relays, will disable the
trim/tilt and turn on the deck lights.
Maintenance of the box is limited to ensuring no water has
entered it. If water is found, then dry as much as possible
with paper towels. Check the condition of the lid seal.
All terminals should be checked that they are secure and
corroded ones replaced.
Circuit breaker
Circuit breakers act like fuses in an electrical circuit. If
the breaker carries too high a current then it ‘trips out’
and breaks the supply to the piece of equipment. When
the fault has been removed, the breaker can be reset
using the large button showing the breaker’s amp rating.
The small red button is used to trip out the breaker.
Occasionally heavy slamming of the boat can cause the
breakers to trip out.
The image below shows the circuit breaker description
on the Atlantic 85. This is printed on the cover of the
isolation box.
Changing the circuit breaker
To replace one or more breaker switches carry out the
following procedure:
• Turn the isolators off and disconnect the batteries.
• Undo the screws holding the Bus-bar in place and
remove the bus-bar.
• Release the top screw that holds the wire in place on the
faulty circuit breaker.
• Find the small lever located on the circuit board
underneath the circuit breaker and use a small
screwdriver to disconnect the circuit breaker.
• Insert the wire at the top of the circuit breaker and
tighten the screw before clipping the circuit breaker
back in place.
• Press the circuit breaker down until it clicks.
• Slide the Bus-bar back in and fit its attaching screws.
• Push the feed cable right to the top and tighten the
screws. Give the cable a tug to check it is securely
in place.
