12. Put the guidebolt (7-2283) through the hole in the
banjo bolt (7-2286), slide the spacer (7-2284) over the
guidebolt, then bolt the guidebolt into the threaded
hole in the scoop inner through the slot in the scoop
housing. Ensure that it is well tightened.
Adjustment of the system
13. Put the lever as far forward as possible without
excessive force (the lever may not snap into its detent
at this stage but this does not matter), then bring it
steadily back to the middle position (this ensures the
link is fully compressed).
14. To make it easy to observe link extention, make a mark
using a fine tipped permanent marker pen on the inner
cable immediately above the top of the spring sleeve.
Now if the spring is compressed, the mark will be
seen to move away from the top of the spring sleeve.
Put the lever as far aft as it will go without excessive
force (again it may not yet find its detent), then have
someone move it slowly forward while observing the
mark on on the cable. The spring should not compress
until the scoop reaches the top of its travel. If it does,
this indicates that the scoop inner is too tight in the
scoop housing, probably caused by dirt ingress or lack
of grease.
15. If the lever will not snap into its fwd detent when the
scoop reaches the top of its travel, unscrew the upper
large locknut on the outer cable until the lever will
snap into its fwd detent.
16. Have somebody pull the lever back to mid position
then slowly push it back to the forward position.
Observe the pen mark on the cable (and thus the spring
compression) as the lever snaps into the fwd detent.
The spring should compress by about 3.5 mm (shown
by the pen mark rising 3.5mm above the top of the
spring sleeve). If the link extends more than 3.5mm,
slacken the upper large locknut on the outer cable and
tighten the lower locknut tight up against the hanger.
If the spring compresses less than 3.5 mm (or not at
all), slacken the lower large locknut, and tighten the
upper one.
17. When the correct adjustment appears to be reached,
hold the cable and upper nut from turning and tighten
the lower nut tight against the hanger.
18. Operate the lever through full travel several times (it
should now snap into all three detents) and check the
3.5mm adjustment. Repeat step 16 if necessary.
The B-Class Atlantic 85 self-righting system
Overview
On the B-Class Atlantic 85 Class Lifeboat the self-righting
system consists of two gas bottles, two supply hoses and
an inflation bag.
The gas cylinders are of a steel construction and contain a
mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen under pressure in
liquid form.
When the boat righting system is operated an actuating/
release knife punctures a diaphragm within the cylinder
head thus releasing the pressure and turning the liquid mix
to a gas. The gas then flows through the supply hose to the
inflation bag. The hose is fitted with a non-return valve at
the bag end.
NOTE
When carrying out work on the system, it is vital
that the job card 0801-6M-004
is used to ensure
correct safety procedures are followed.
Any maintenance on the roll frame and
righting system is at staff level 2.
