Activity 9 - Propulsion and Auxiliary Systems
Gearbox assembly
The Yamaha F115 (OE 26) and F115A (OE 33) outboard
engines are fitted with a gearbox that has forward (ahead)
and reverse (astern) gears. Little maintenance is required
apart from changing the oil and renewal of the salt-water
pump as required.
Changing the oil
CAUTION
As per the COSHH assessment relating to the oil,
personnel should wear suitable protective clothing
such as coveralls and disposable gloves when
carrying out this task.
When changing the gearbox oil both the lower drain plug
and the upper level indicator screw need to be removed, as
this will release the oil quicker.
A suitable container should be placed beneath the gearbox
to capture the old oil. Once all the old oil is drained,
replace it with the recommended High Viscosity oil
(Yamalube GL4).
The oil filler plug has a magnet set into it and this should
be inspected for metal particles that are an indication
of internal wear on the gears and clutch which may lead
to failure in the future. Both plugs must also have their
gaskets present and in a good condition.
If the gearbox oil is white in colour, then water has got into
the gearbox due to failing seals. After changing the oil, this
will need regular monitoring. If contamination continues
the gearbox will need changing.
If the gearbox oil has not been changed regularly (usually
every 50 hours or 6 months whichever is the sooner) then
it will be very black and smell strongly of rotten eggs!
NOTE
Old oil must be disposed of as per Operations
Department directives.
Re-filling
Before re-filling the gearbox, check the condition of the
filler and level plugs and their respective seals and replace
as necessary.
The gearbox is filled from the bottom up. Take the tube of
recommended oil and push the nozzle firmly into the lower
drain plug hole. Squeeze the tube, pumping the oil into the
gearbox until it appears at the upper level indicator hole.
Keep filling with oil until air bubbles are no longer seen
rising from within the gearbox.
While still holding the tube in place, replace the upper
level plug. Remove the tube and quickly replace the drain
plug but be careful not to cross-thread the plug.
To replace the gearbox oil, refer to job card
0801-50-001. (Staff level 2)

Removing the gearbox
The Yamaha F115 outboard engines have been modified in
the area of the exhaust ducting just above the gearbox due
to problems encountered during trials when going astern.
Consequently a counter balanced flap valve has been fitted
which mechanics need to be aware of when removing and
refitting a gearbox.
To remove the gearbox, refer to Technical Procedure:
TP-Atlantic85-50-0002. You will also need to refer to
job card 0801-1Y-004. (Staff level 2)
