Engine fuel system
The fuel is drawn up from the on-board fuel system
(see page 93), through the fuel filter which contains
a water separator and water detection switch. The
mechanical lift pump (low pressure pump) continues to
send the fuel into the vapour separator which contains a
float and a high pressure fuel pump.
The high pressure fuel pump sends the fuel to the fuel rail
where a pressure regulator maintains a stable fuel pressure
according to the vacuum pressure in the intake manifold.
With a maintained fuel pressure, the ECU can control the
precise quantity of fuel to be injected into the cylinders,
depending on the signals received from the other parts of
the electronic control system.
Excess fuel goes back into the separator via a fuel cooler
that uses the cooling system to condense the fuel; brass
pipes are used to prevent corrosion.
