Using Navtex
Introduction
NAVTEX is an integral part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System
(GMDSS) and provides an international automated direct service for the
promulgation of Marine Safety Information (MSI) to boats at sea. This
international system operates world-wide on the same frequency so there is no
need for your receiver to be retuned from country to country. You can set your
NAVTEX receiver to receive specific message types and reject others, however,
messages such as meteorological and search and rescue alerts cannot be rejected
to ensure that you always receive the most vital information.
The screen
The Navtex screen has a toolbar across the top that allows you to set your
required preferences for receiving messages and alerts.
The left hand column is the Inbox for messages and is arranged alphabetically.
The top right of the screen shows messages contained in the selected section of
the Inbox. The lower part of the screen displays the message text.
