Remote Control via an External PC

The R&S UPZ can be remotely controlled by means of a PC in two different ways:

Via an Audio Analyzer

Via the RS-232-C interface

The first possibility has been already described. The following manual explains remote
control via the RS-232-C interface by an external PC.

4.1  Brief Instructions

The instrument is equipped with two RS-232-C interfaces as standard. The interfaces
on the rear panel are used to connect an Audio Analyzer or a PC for remote control as
well as other R&S UPZ, if required.

Some modifications have been made to enable several R&S UPZ to be simultaneously
operated at this serial interface. These modifications do not allow normal handshake
operation.

In contrast to manual control, which to give optimum operating convenience, remote
control is to ensure a predictable device status after a command. This means that after
an attempt to perform incompatible settings, for example, the command is rejected and
the device status remains unchanged without other settings being modified. Therefore,
RS-232-C control programs should always set a default status (e.g. with the *RST
command) and then make the required settings.

If the R&S UPZ is not controlled via the R&S UPL but via a PC, the special features of
the modified RS-232-C interfaces must be taken into account.

The normal handshake is not used for control in order to allow cascading. Data
exchange is bidirectional but only sequential. This is necessary to prevent two or more
R&S UPZ from sending data simultaneously so that their data would be superimposed
on each other or even corrupted.

4.2  Hardware Interfaces

4.2.1  RS-232-C interface

The R&S UPZ is equipped with two RS-232-C interfaces as standard.

The 9-contact female connector labelled FROM PREVIOUS is used to connect the PC
to the R&S UPZ.
