Dolby Digital
Dolby Digital is a multichannel digital audio coding
system widely used in cinemas, and in the home fo
r DVD
and digital b r oadcast soundt r acks. It can delive r u p to six
disc r ete audio channels, com pr ising five full r ange
channels and a s p ecial LFE (low f r equency effects)
channel used mainly fo r dee p , r umbling sound effects;
hence the te r m “5.1-channel” Dolby Digital.
In addition to the fo r mat featu r es above, Dolby Digital
decode r s offe r downmixing fo r com p atibility with mono,
ste r eo and Dolby P r o Logic audio f r om a numbe r of bit
r ates and channels. Anothe r featu r e, called Dialog
No r malization, attenuates pr og r ams based on the
ave r age level of dialog in a pr og r am r elative to its p eak
level (also known as Dialno r m) in o r de r to achieve
unifo r m p layback level.
Dolby Digital Surround EX
Dolby Digital Su rr ound EX (the EX stands fo r EXtended)
is an extension of Dolby Digital encoding whe r eby a
su rr ound back channel is mat r ixed into the su rr ound left/
r ight channels fo r 6.1 channel p layback. This allows fo r
com p atibility with Dolby Digital 5.1 channel decoding, as
well as fo r decoding using Dolby Digital EX.
Dolby Pro Logic IIx and Dolby Surround
Dolby P r o Logic IIx is an im pr oved ve r sion of the Dolby
P r o Logic II (and Dolby P r o Logic) decoding system. Using
the innovative “stee r ing logic” ci r cuit, this system
ext r acts su rr ound sound f r om sou r ces as follows:

Dolby Pro Logic
– 4.1 channel sound (mono
su rr ound) f r om any ste r eo sou r ce
• Dolby Pro Logic II – 5.1 channel sound (ste r eo
su rr ound) f r om any ste r eo sou r ce
• Dolby Pro Logic IIx – 6.1 o r 7.1 channel sound
(ste r eo su rr ound and su rr ound back) f r om two
channel o r 5.1 (and 6.1) channel sou r ces
With two channel sources, the “.1” subwoofer channel is
generated by bass management in the receiver.
Dolby Su rr ound is an
encoding
system which embeds
su rr ound sound info r mation within a ste r eo soundt r ack,
which a Dolby P r o Logic decode r can then use fo r
enhanced su rr ound listening with g r eate r sound detail.
Dolby Digital Plus
Dolby Digital Plus is the next-gene r ation audio
technology fo r all high-definition pr og r amming and
media. It combines the efficiency to meet futu r e
b r oadcast demands with the p owe r and flexibility to
r ealize the full audio p otential ex p ected in the u p coming
high-definition e r a. Built on Dolby Digital, the multi-
channel audio standa r d fo r DVD and HD b r oadcasts
wo r ldwide, Dolby Digital Plus was designed fo r the next-
gene r ation A/V r eceive r s but r emains fully com p atible
with all cu rr ent A/V r eceive r s.
Dolby Digital Plus delive r s multi-channel audio pr og r ams
of u p to 7.1 channels (*) and su pp o r ts multi p le pr og r ams
in a single encoded bitst r eam with the maximum bit r ate
p otential of u p to 6 Mb p s and the maximum bit r ate
p e r fo r mance of u p to 3 Mb p s on HD DVD and 1.7 Mb p s
on Blu- r ay Disc, and it out p uts Dolby Digital bitst r eams
fo r p layback on existing Dolby Digital systems. Dolby
Digital Plus can accu r ately r e pr oduce the sound
o r iginally intended by di r ecto r s and pr oduce r s.
It also featu r es multi-channel sound with disc r ete
channel out p ut, inte r active mixing and st r eaming
ca p ability in advanced systems. Su pp o r ted by High-
Definition Media Inte r face (HDMI), a single-cable digital
connection is p ossible fo r high-definition audio and video.
Dolby TrueHD
Dolby T r ueHD is the next-gene r ation lossless encoding
technology develo p ed fo r high-definition o p tical discs in
the u p coming e r a. Dolby T r ueHD delive r s tantalizing
sound that is bit-fo r -bit identical to the studio maste r ,
unlocking the t r ue high-definition ente r tainment
ex p e r ience on high-definition o p tical discs in the next
gene r ation. When cou p led with high-definition video,
Dolby T r ueHD offe r s an un pr ecedented home theate r
ex p e r ience with stunning sound and high-definition
p ictu r e.
It su pp o r ts bit r ates of u p to 18 Mb p s and r eco r ds u p to 8
full- r ange channels (*) individually with 24-bit/96 kHz
audio. It also featu r es extensive metadata including
dialogue no r malization and dynamic r ange cont r ol.
Su pp o r ted by High-Definition Media Inte r face (HDMI), a
single-cable digital connection is p ossible fo r high-
definition audio and video.
HD DVD and Blu- r ay Disc standa r ds cu rr ently limit thei r
maximum numbe r of audio channels to eight, whe r eas
Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby T r ueHD su pp o r t mo r e than
eight audio channels.
