Using Stream Direct
Use the St r eam Di r ect modes when you want to hea r the
t r uest p ossible r e pr oduction of a sou r ce. All unnecessa r y
signal pr ocessing is by p assed, and you’ r e left with the
p u r e analog o r digital sound sou r ce.
• While listening to a source, press , then
press AUTO/ALC/DIRECT (AUTO SURR/ALC/STREAM
DIRECT) to select the mode you want.
Check the digital fo r mat indicato r s in the f r ont p anel
dis p lay to see how the sou r ce is being pr ocessed.
• AUTO SURROUND – See Auto playback on p age 50.
• ALC – Listening in Auto level cont r ol mode ( p age 50).
• DIRECT – Sou r ces a r e hea r d acco r ding to the
settings made in the Su rr ound Setu p (s p eake r
setting, channel level, s p eake r distance, acoustic
calib r ation EQ, and X-cu r ve), as well as with dual
mono, the in p ut attenuato r , and any sound delay
settings. You will hea r sou r ces acco r ding to the
numbe r of channels in the signal.
• PURE DIRECT – Analog sou r ces a r e hea r d without
any digital pr ocessing. No sound is out p ut f r om the
S p eake r B in this mode.
Using surround back channel
processing
• Default setting: SBch ON
You can have the r eceive r automatically use 6.1 o r 7.1
decoding fo r 6.1 encoded sou r ces (fo r exam p le, Dolby
Digital EX o r DTS-ES), o r you can choose to always use
6.1 o r 7.1 decoding (fo r exam p le, with 5.1 encoded
mate r ial). With 5.1 encoded sou r ces, a su rr ound back
channel will be gene r ated, but the mate r ial may sound
bette r in the 5.1 fo r mat fo r which it was o r iginally
encoded (in which case, you can sim p ly switch su rr ound
back channel pr ocessing off).
• With a 7.1-channel su rr ound system, audio signals
that have unde r gone mat r ix decoding pr ocessing
th r ough su rr ound back channel pr ocessing to which
the U p Mix function is added a r e out p ut f r om the
su rr ound back s p eake r s.
• Press , then press SBch repeatedly to
cycle the surround back channel options.
Each pr ess cycles th r ough the o p tions as follows:
• SBch ON – Mat r ix decoding pr ocessing fo r
gene r ating the su rr ound back com p onent f r om the
su rr ound com p onent is tu r ned on.
• SBch AUTO – Mat r ix decoding pr ocessing fo r
gene r ating the su rr ound back com p onent f r om the
su rr ound com p onent is switched automatically.
Mat r ix decoding pr ocessing is only p e r fo r med when
su rr ound back channel signals a r e detected in the
in p ut signals.

SBch OFF
– Mat r ix decoding pr ocessing fo r
gene r ating the su rr ound back com p onent f r om the
su rr ound com p onent is tu r ned off.
Using the Virtual Surround Back mode
• Default setting:
OFF
When you’ r e not using su rr ound back s p eake r s,
selecting this mode allows you to hea r a vi r tual su rr ound
back channel th r ough you r su rr ound s p eake r s. You can
choose to listen to sou r ces with no su rr ound back
channel info r mation, o r if the mate r ial sounds bette r in
the fo r mat (fo r exam p le, 5.1) fo r which it was o r iginally
encoded, you can have the r eceive r only a pp ly this effect
to 6.1 encoded sou r ces like Dolby Digital EX o r DTS-ES.

1 • You can’t use the Vi r tual Su rr ound Back mode when the head p hones a r e connected to this r eceive r o r when any of the ste r eo, F r ont Stage
Su rr ound Advance o r St r eam Di r ect mode is selected.
• You can only use the Vi r tual Su rr ound Back mode if the su rr ound s p eake r s a r e on and the SB setting is set to NO o r if Front Bi-Amp , Speaker B
o r ZONE 2 is selected at Surr Back System .
• The Vi r tual Su rr ound Back mode cannot be a pp lied to sou r ces that do not have su rr ound channel info r mation.
