Location and Ventilation
To allow for adequate cooling
The imaging system is installed by a PerkinElmer Service Engineer, who will be able to advise
on the siting of the system. To allow for adequate cooling, the system should not be sited
near to room heating equipment, for example, central heating radiators. There should be a
minimum gap of at least 15 cm (6 inches) from the top and side surfaces of the imager and
stage controller to permit adequate cooling.
WARNING
Make sure that the switches at the electrical supply inlet at the rear of
the imager and of the stage controller are not obstructed.
To allow nitrogen to disperse
WARNING
Liquid nitrogen is used to cool the MCT detector.
Oxygen depletion in an enclosed space does not trigger a gasping reflex,
and errors of judgment, confusion, or unconsciousness can occur in
seconds and without warning.
The imager may be fitted with an MCT detector that is cooled using liquid nitrogen. A risk
assessment should include personal protection protocols, and proper actions in the event of
accidental spillage. 1 L (2 US pints) of liquid nitrogen evolves to 700 L (approximately 25
cubic feet) of nitrogen gas, and the cold vapor can pool at floor level. The imager should only
be used in a well-ventilated area.
