Install the Mandatory Front Slot Cards
The PA-7050 requires a minimum of three cards that are installed in the front slots of the chassis. These
cards are shipped separately from the chassis and include the following: The Switch Management Card
(SMC) provides management connectivity to the chassis and HA connectivity; the Log Processing Card
(LPC) handles all log processing and log storage for the firewall; and at least one Network Processing
Cards (NPC) must be installed before the firewall can process data traffic. Up to five more NPCs can be
added expand port density and processing. For details about these cards, see “PA-7050 Modules and
Interface Card Overview” on page 13. For information on replacing failed front slot cards, see “Replace
Front Slot Cards” on page 55.

Install the Switch Management Card (SMC)
The Switch Management Card (SMC) is required to operate the chassis and must be installed in slot 4.
The SMC has different size alignment pins, which prevents it from being installed in any other slot. For
information about the SMC, see “Switch Management Card (SMC)” on page 14.

Ensure that the chassis is powered off and that no power cords are connected.

Attach the provided ESD strap to your wrist and plug it into one of the ESD ports located on the
front of the chassis. The ESD ports are located along the bottom row of the chassis and you will see
three ports, any of which can be used. For details on the ESD port location, see “Front Panel (AC)”
on page 6.

Remove the SMC from the anti-static bag and slide it into slot 4 ensuring that the handles are in the
open position by pressing upward on the black release latches.

When the cards is about 1/4” from being fully inserted, adjust the levers to align with the chassis
and then close the levers to seat the card in place as shown in Figure 15.
Note: Although all front slot card have protection to prevent damage if they are
installed or removed when the chassis is powered, only the NPC is intended to be
hot-swapped during normal operation. The SMC and LPC should only be
installed/replaced when the chassis is powered off.
