Using the Driver Software Provided Commands
By typing “hwhelp” at the prompt symbol “=>”, it will display all of the software driver provided
commands in the Hyper Terminal Window. With the exception of the PCI configuration registers,
the user can use these commands, to read or write to all of the registers, and transmit or receive
packets, display the MIB counter values, etc. Figure 18 shows an example how to read the
Switch ID and Enable Register (offset 0X400) SIDER for the KSZ8842-PMQL.
From the datasheet of the KSZ8842-PMQL, the SIDER register is a 16 bit register. Bits 15-8 =
0X88 and indicates the Chip family ID. Bits 7-4 = 0x4 and indicates the Chip ID. Bit 0 is set to ‘1’
by the software driver to start the switch. Therefore, the result of reading the register is 0X8841 in
the lower two Bytes.
