Pressure Support in detail 

1. Pressure Support assures that a preset 

inspiratory pressure level is constantly 
maintained upon patient effort. 

2. The preset pressure level is controlled by 

the ventilator, while the patient 
determines frequency and inspiration 
time.

3. Inspiration starts when the patient 

triggers.

Expiration starts:

a. When the inspiratory flow decreases 

below a preset fraction of the 
inspiratory peak flow (Inspiratory 
cycle-off)

b. If the upper pressure limit is 

exceeded.
