How to turn off my computer?
• For Windows 7: Open the Start menu, then click Shut down .
• For Windows 8.1: Do one of the following:
– Go to the Start screen by pressing the Windows key, click the power icon in the top-right corner
of the screen, then click Shut down .
– Move your pointer to the top-right or bottom-right corner of the screen to display the charms. Then
click Settings ➙ Power ➙ Shut down .
Note: You also can open the Settings charm by pressing the settings key .
How do I use battery power more effectively when I am on the go?
• To conserve power, or to suspend operation without exiting programs or saving files, see “Power-saving
modes” on page 34.
• To achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, create and apply power plans. See
“Managing your power plan” on page 34
• If your computer will be turned off for an extended period of time, you can prevent battery power from
draining by removing the battery.
How do I securely dispose of data stored on the storage drive?
• Study Chapter 5 “Security” on page 61 to find out how you can protect your computer from theft and
unauthorized use.
• Use the password to protect the data stored on your computer. For details, see “Using passwords”
on page 61.
• Before you dispose of the data on the storage drive, be sure to read the topic “Notice on deleting data
from your storage drive” on page 70.
How do I attach an external monitor?
• Ensure that you follow the procedure in the topic “Using an external display” on page 38.
• With the Extend desktop function, you can display output on both the computer display and an external
monitor. See “Choosing a display mode” on page 39.
How do I attach or replace a device?
• See Chapter 10 “Replacing devices” on page 121 for more information about replacing the devices of
your computer.
I have been using the computer for some time already, and it is getting slower. What should I do?
• Follow the “General tips for preventing problems” on page 91.
• Diagnose problems yourself by using the preinstalled diagnostic software. See “Diagnosing problems”

Can I change the Windows 8.1 startup behavior to open either the desktop or the Start screen?
• On the Windows 8.1 operating system, you can set the computer to open either the desktop or the Start
screen by default. To set the default startup screen, do the following:
1. On the desktop, move your pointer to the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and right-click on
the taskbar.
2. Click Properties . The taskbar and Navigation properties window is displayed.
