Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly

Attention:

Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Chapter

1 “Safety information” on page 1.

This section provides instructions on how to replace the heat sink and fan assembly.

CAUTION:

The heat sink and fan assembly might be very hot. Before you open the computer cover, turn off the
computer and wait several minutes until the computer is cool.

To replace the heat sink and fan assembly, do the following:

1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer. Then, disconnect

all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer.

2. Remove the computer cover. See “Removing the computer cover” on page 159.

3. Remove the front bezel. See “Removing and reinstalling the front bezel” on page 160

4. Locate the heat sink and fan assembly. See “Locating major FRUs and CRUs” on page 80

5. Pivot the two plastic retaining clips that secure the heat sink fan duct outward. Then, remove the heat

sink fan duct from the failing heat sink and fan assembly.

6. Disconnect the cable of the heat sink and fan assembly from the system board.
