29. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR HANDLING A LEAD BATTERY
1. The electrolyte in a lead battery is diluted sulphuric acid. Several metals and organic
substances are corroded by sulphuric acid. Always wear goggles, gloves and protective
clothing when working with batteries. Any electrolyte splashed on skin should be removed
immediately with plenty of fresh water. If electrolyte gets into eyes, they should be flushed
for at least ten minutes. Immediate medical attention required.
2. Batteries generate hydrogen and oxygen gases during normal use. Together they form
an explosive mixture. All local battery systems containing energy more than 15 kWh
should be stored in a separate, efficiently ventilated battery room. The materials of the
battery room should be selected so that they prevent static electricity and consequent
sparks. The safety of a battery room is also enhanced by protective ceramic plugs in the
batteries.
3. When connecting and wiring batteries, use only insulated tools in order to prevent short
cuts. The battery terminals should be protected during transport.
4. The battery terminals and other lead components contain poisonous lead substances.
Please carefully wash your hands after handling batteries. Abandoned lead batteries are
toxic waste. They should be disposed of properly in designated collection points. Service
stations have facilities for receiving discarded starter batteries.
DO NOT POLLUTE NATURE BY DISCARDED BATTERIES!
