Driving
on
ramps
and
mountain roads
Keep good vehicle condition
Check all fuel/oil levels, brakes, tires,
the cooling system and transmission.
When driving uphill/downhill, these
systems will undergo large loads.
Master downhill driving skills
Use the engine braking to slow down.
When driving on a steeply uphill or
downhill road, shift to a lower gear.
Pay
special
attention
when
driving uphill over a slope crest
There may be obstacles such as
broken-down
vehicles
or
traffic
accidents on your driving road.
If you often drive on steeply uphill
roads or plan to drive to an mounta
-inous area, abide by the following
precautions:
Pay attention to special warning
signs
There may be special warning signs on
mountainous
roads
including
long
slope, overtaking or no overtaking,
rockfall hazard, or curves. Pay attention
to such signs and adopt correct
measures.
○
When driving downhill with
-out slowing down, the brake
will not work normally due to
overheating. That will reduce the
braking
performance
during
driving downhill and even cause
the braking failure. In this
situation,
an
accident
may
occur. When driving downhill,
shift to a lower gear and
decelerate by using the engine
braking.
○
Shifting to Neutral or stopping
the engine during a downhill
travel is hazardous. That is
because it is the brake that
decelerates your car. The brake
will
fail
to
work
due
to
overheating. That will reduce the
braking
performance
during
driving downhill and even cause
the
braking
failure.
In
this
situation, an accident may occur.
So, when driving downhill, you
had better keep the engine
running and not shift to Neutral.
