Maintenance and adjustment

to check the battery electrolyte lev-
el if necessary Fig. 40.
• Ensure vent plugs are correctly and
tightly installed.
• Always remove the negative (—)
black cable first.

the tractor under the hood, Pull slightly and
move to the side to release engine cover
holders (Fig. 41)
• Check the condition of the battery en
-
suring that the electrolyte is up to lev-
el. Clean the top of the battery, check
that the terminals are tight and smear
them with petroleum jelly.
• Under normal use, maintenance-free
batteries will not require topping up.
In the event of an alternator failure al-
ways check the electrolyte levels. The
height above the plates should be 15
mm (5/8 in). If low, adjust to the cor-
rect level by the addition of distilled or
deionized water.
• In the event of an accidental discharge
it is strongly recommended that the
battery is fully recharged in the work-
shop. The recharge should be carried
out by a mains charger at 7 amps.
ALTERNATOR AND FAN BELT
Check the fan and alternator belt
tension every 250 hours.
WARNING
If the hood (safety guard) is removed
or loosened whilst checking the belt ten-
sion, it must be refitted and secured be-
fore restarting the tractor.
Fig. 42 gives a typical illustration of
the alternator/fan belt arrangement; your
tractor may differ slightly in the position-
ing of the adjustment link.
Renew the belt if it is worn or dam-
aged.
To check the deflection, press down
the belt with the thumb at the centre of
the longest free length. With moderate
thumb pressure the correct deflection of
the belt is 10 mm (3/8 in) .
If a belt tension gauge is available, the
correct tension is 355 N (80 lbf), DO NOT
allow the tension to fall below 220 N (50
lbf).
To adjust the belt tension:
1. Loosen the alternator pivot bolts (1)
