How to clean Ferrules is explained below using a fiber cable plug (female) as an example.

Turn the screw counterclockwise.

Loose the screw at the center of the connector with a flatblade screwdriver or coin.
After turned nine or ten turns counterclockwise, the screw gets out of place. The screw is not removed because it is attached to the top.

Pull the screw and remove the top from the connector.

Move the swab only in one
direction (vertically or horizontally)
when cleaning the Ferrule.
Do not move the swab back
and forth when wiping the Ferrule.

Saturate a swab with alcohol and wipe the Ferrule with the swab.
At this time, move the swab straight in a way in which you brush foreign matters off the Ferrule. Do not move the swab
round and round in a way in which the Ferrule is rubbed with foreign matters.
4.
After wiping the Ferrule with the swab saturated with alcohol, wipe the Ferrule with a dry swab again.
5.
After cleaning the Ferrule, check using a loupe that the Ferrule is free from foreign matters.
6.
Align the top with the connector guide and push it into the original position. Tighten the screw with the flatblade screwdriver.
Cleaning is now complete.
