2. The labels must be oriented on the cartridge, as shown in Figure 255 on page PROC-24. The new

cartridge labels must be placed totally within the recessed area on the tape cartridge. The label must
be placed flat over the length of the label and cannot have folds, missing pieces, tears or have any
extraneous markings, including smears or smudges.

If the label is not placed properly, the bar code reader cannot read the bar code. Misplaced labels may
also interfere with the proper operation of the drive.

Resolving Bar Code Reader Problems

If there is a mismatch between the VOLSER and the bar code label, see “Resolving a Mismatch Between
the Bar Code Label and VOLSER” on page PROC-26.

If the host displays a message stating that either the VOLSER (Volume ID) does not match or a cartridge
is not found, see “Resolving a Mismatch Between the Bar Code Label and VOLSER” on page PROC-26.

If the Bar Coder Reader cannot read the bar code label on a tape cartridge, perform the following:

1. Check the cartridge labels for folds, missing pieces, tears or any extraneous markings, including

smears or smudges along the length of the label.

2. If the labels are dirty or marked, clean the labels. See “Cleaning Cartridge Labels” on

page PROC-23.

3. If a cartridge label needs to be replaced, the customer can order a kit containing enough replacement

labels for 10 cartridges. See “Replacing Cartridge Labels” on page PROC-23.

4. If the cartridge labels are not damaged or dirty, clean the bar code sensor which is mounted on the

picker assembly. Because the sensor is located inside the picker, the picker assembly must be
removed from the library in order to reach the sensor. For picker removal and replacement
procedures, refer to “FID 9A: Picker Assembly” on page CARR-23. Using a cotton swab with a 4 inch
or longer extension and a small amount of alcohol, gently clean the glass window of the sensor. Two
or three swipes over the window area is sufficient to clean the sensor.

5. If the Bar Code Reader still does not work, replace the FRUs listed under FID 94 in Figure 8 on

page START-12.
