Upgrading from another Palm OS
handheld
If you already own a Palm OS handheld, you must install the version
of Palm Desktop software for IBM WorkPad that comes with your
new PC companion. To upgrade quickly and easily, perform the tasks
described in the following sections. Some tasks are specifically for
upgrading.
Preparing to use your PC companion
Before you begin using your PC companion and Palm Desktop
software for IBM WorkPad, you must complete a few easy installation
tasks.
To use your PC companion and Palm Desktop software for IBM
WorkPad, complete the following:
■
(If upgrading) Perform a HotSync operation using your old PC
companion and cradle. This ensures all data on your PC
companion is on your desktop computer.
■
Connect the HotSync cradle that comes with your new PC
companion to your computer. See “Connecting the HotSync
cradle” later in this chapter for details.
■
Charge the battery in your new PC companion. See “Charging
your PC companion” later in this chapter for details.
■
(If upgrading) You may want to create a copy of your old Palm
Desktop software for IBM WorkPad folder and its contents before
installing your new Palm Desktop software for IBM WorkPad. If
you do this, rename the copied folder (for example, Palm Old), and
store it outside the Palm Desktop software for IBM WorkPad
folder. This step is optional.
Universal
connector
Connects your PC companion to the cradle,
which in turn connects to the back of your
computer and through the AC adapter to the wall
current. This allows you to recharge your PC
companion as well as update the information
between your PC companion and computer
using HotSync
™
technology.
The universal connector also connects peripheral
hardware devices, such as a modem, to your PC
companion.
