Digital Imaging with Hasselblad

The ImageBank II
The Hasselblad ImageBank II is a separate, battery-powered accessory unit that can be car-
ried on a belt and is connected to the socket at the bottom on the left side of the sensor unit
with a standard FireWire 800 cable. This 100 GB unit, which is basically an external FireWire
hard disc, can store a large number of images without stopping to reload a new CF card. But
you have a cable connection going from the camera to the ImageBank. The number of images
depends on the fi le size and varies from about 1900 to 4300; to be more specifi c 4330 for 16
Mpixels, 3340 for 22 Mpixels, 2288 for 31 Mpixels, and 1887 for 39 Mpixels. There is basically
no difference between storing the images on a card or in the ImageBank II. With the H3D
cameras you must use the Hasselblad ImageBank II. The older version, just called “ImageBank”
cannot be used with these cameras.
Copying Files to ImageBank-II
You can copy fi les from a CF card to an ImageBankII by connecting the
ImageBank to the camera with a FireWire cable. This will free up space on the card, but the
images remain on the card until deleted. To copy fi les, press MENU and navigate to STORAGE.
Press the button and navigate down to COPY. Press the button that brings up the confi rma-
tion dialog. To confi rm press the OK button. To cancel press the EXIT button. Press STOP
to cancel the process. All the batches and fi les are copied to the ImageBank in a newly cre-
ated folder. When you connect the cable to the ImageBank again later, a new folder is created
automatically.
Working with the CF Card
Working with the CF card is nice especially when working handheld since there are no cables
to worry about. The drawback of the limited capacity of the card can be eliminated by trans-
ferring the images to the ImageBank II as soon as you have fi lled up one or several cards. This
transfer can be done in the fi eld during a shooting break. This procedure combines the mobil-
ity of shooting without any cable connection with the massive storage capacity of an external
hard drive. In shooting sessions where you have access to a computer, you can make this
transfer directly to the computer from the camera using a FireWire cable and run FlexColor
or Phocus to automate the process. If you do not want to interrupt the shooting session, you
can also remove the full card from the camera and insert it into a compact CF card reader
connected to the computer.
Direct Connection to Computer
The sensor unit on the camera can be connected directly to the computer using a FireWire
cable from the FireWire port on the computer to the connector on the side of the sensor unit
on the camera. This is normally called tethered shooting. On the H3D cameras, the connector
port on the sensor unit is protected by a self-closing fl ap. Align the FireWire cable connec-
tor as shown on the fl ap then press it against the fl ap until it stops. Tethered to a computer,
you can see the image on the large computer screen and control many functions such as all
exposure settings and ISO from the computer using the FlexColor or Phocus software. The
