THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL
to Phocus and FlexColor, but each has its own operating procedures so you must refer to the
instruction manual for details.
ADVANTAGES OF PHOCUS
Photographers have been satisfi ed with the operation, the results, and the image quality that
they achieved with FlexColor. Hasselblad felt however that it was time to support the photog-
rapher’s workfl ow with the most modern and best conceivable raw conversion engine that
refl ects the way photographers work, or like to work today and gives the photographer more
time to take pictures instead of processing them. The Phocus version delivers the ultimate
quality and perfect colors in the Hasselblad digital process and gives you the fl exibility and
power necessary to enjoy the workfl ow solutions with several major advantages.
The Tool’s software’s palettes are neatly organized under four tabs representing the
four basic steps Capture, Browse, Adjust, and Export in the workfl ow process where the
actual Raw conversion takes place. Photographers familiar with Apple’s Aperture or Adobe
Lightroom programs will feel right at home in Phocus.
Phocus allows all three DAC levels of image correction to be controlled individually with
level 1 dealing with chromatic aberration, level 2 with distortion, and level 3 with vignetting
which is adjustable between 0 and 100%.
Moiré is practically never a problem in the multi-shot mode but the multi-shot mode is
either not practical or impossible to use in many shooting situations and is possible only with
the special Hasselblad multi-shot cameras or digital backs. Moiré is also not a serious problem
in the Hasselblad single-shot mode except for high resolution images that can exhibit moiré
under certain circumstances, Phocus implements a unique algorithm for moiré removal that
identifi es the areas within the image that are prone to moiré eliminating the need for mak-
ing special masks or other manual manipulations. The other parts are masked automatically
and thus unaffected by side effects of moiré removal. Moiré removal is performed directly on
the raw data but within the potentially affected areas so that moiré is not really removed but
avoided. This new “Deep Impact Moiré Filter,” which can be used with any 3RF fi le, has 5 dif-
ferent settings or can be turned off completely. Set the moiré removal to the least aggressive
setting that delivers a clean image without unwanted artifacts.
Pre-planning for a shoot makes all work with any DSLR camera more successful but
Phocus makes this pre-planning easier and also allows making practically all camera controls
such as metering and exposure mode, aperture, shutter speed, manual and auto focus, ISO, EV,
and changes in the white balance settings from the computer. Such controls are also possible
with a Hasselblad digital capture unit mounted on a view camera especially when the view
camera is equipped with an electronic shutter lens.
The view section of Phocus also offers a wide selection of options such as full view,
browse, and simultaneous viewing of two images for comparisons.
When using the Hasselblad Global Image Locater (GIL), Phocus allows you not only to
see the coordinates of the geo-tagged images but provides a link to Google Earth to show
exactly where each image was taken from a bird’s eye view and even lets you fl y right into
the location.
Phocus may also allow you to work at higher ISO ratings, double the normal rate.
