OPERATING THE 503 AND OTHER V SYSTEM CAMERAS FOR DIGITAL IMAGING
The Hasselblad 503CW, other 503, and V system cameras are good tools for digital imaging
by simply attaching a digital back instead of the fi lm magazine to the camera body. The cam-
eras are operated the same way in digital imaging as they are in fi lm photography. The V sys-
tem cameras that do not have a built-in metering system can be equipped with a meterprism
viewfi nder for determining exposure with a built-in TTL metering system that can be used in
both fi lm and digital imaging. Whatever is discussed in this chapter applies also with digital
backs on the cameras except that you need not worry about advancing or not advancing the
fi lm accidentally and protecting the fi lm with a darkslide. Any special instructions for digital
backs are discussed in Chapters 3 and 5.
THE BASIC CAMERA/MAGAZINE OPERATION
On all Hasselblad V system cameras without a built-in motor or a motor drive accessory, the
shutter is recocked and the fi lm advanced by a full turn of the winding crank or knob. On the
motor-driven EL models set to the normal 0 operating position — or on any of the other 500,
200, and 2000 camera models equipped with a motor winder — these operations are done
automatically after the picture has been taken.
Hasselblad cameras can be released only when they are properly interlocked with
lenses and fi lm magazines. The operating signals between camera and magazine are shown in
Figure 9-1.
OPERATING THE 503CW WINDER
The CW motor winder (see Figure 9-2), which makes the 503 camera models motor driven
with a speed of about 1.3 frames per second, is held to the camera not only by the winding
shaft but also by the carrying strap lug and can be used as a grip for convenient handheld
photography. The motor is powered by six 1.5 V AA Alkaline or rechargeable NiCad battery
types. Alkaline batteries should provide at least 3000 exposures in normal conditions.
