13. Level the surface of the coffee powder. Then tamp the coffee powder firmly and
as evenly as possible via the tamper. After tamping, 2-3 mm of free space must
be left to the top of the filter basket. To get stable results, it is important to use
the same pressure every time.
14. If there is too much coffee powder in the filter basket, use a flat object for scrat-
ching off some coffee powder. Then tamp the remaining coffee powder again
for getting a smooth surface.
15. Thoroughly remove residues of coffee powder from the rim of the filter basket to
achieve a proper seal in the group head. With coffee powder on the rim, the
water system cannot reach the required pressure and your coffee may run down
at the exterior of the portafilter.
INSTALLING THE PORTAFILTER
16. Before installing the portafilter at the group head, you should purge the group head
with hot water. For this,
while keeping your hands and arms away from the
group head
, press the SINGLE button. Wait until the cycle is finished automatically.
17. Align the portafilter handle with the “INSERT” position on the group head
(“THERMOBLOCK”) and lift the portafilter into the group head. Turn the portafil-
ter handle towards the right side of the espresso machine until it is facing at right
angle to the front of the espresso machine. Ensure that the portafilter is locked
tightly at the group head.
NOTE
You will feel a high resistance, when turning the portafilter during installation. This
is required for getting a leakfree seal at the group head. The silicone ring of the
group head will not get damaged.
STARTING THE EXTRACTION
WARNING - RISK OF BURNS
– Always ensure that the portafilter is
prepared and installed correctly (see above), before starting the extraction. During
an extraction, hot steam and water are given off under high pressure via the group
head. Therefore, hot water could run out at the exterior of the portafilter, if the por-
tafilter is not sealed correctly at the group head. Do not loosen the portafilter from
the group head, during the extraction. Do not hold your hand or any other part of
your body under or directly near the group head, while an extraction is running.
At the end of the extraction (all function icons illuminate again), wait until the
pressure is released (approx. 10 seconds), before removing the portafilter.
