1 Start/Spin Operation
The Start/Spin operation (Figure 1-15) begins when the START SPIN button is
pressed. As the centrifuge bowl spins, the starting cell product components separate
into different layers based on their specific gravities. In this example, cells with the
highest specific gravity (red blood cells) sediment to the outside of the cell
processing bag. Cells with lower specific gravity (white blood cells and platelets, or
buffy coat) sediment into a middle layer. Cells or fluids with the lowest specific
gravity (plasma in this example) collect toward the center. The extent to which the
starting cell product components separate can be controlled by varying the spin
time and centrifuge speed. The COBE 2991 advances from the Start/Spin
operation to the Supernatant-Out operation when the programmed spin time has
elapsed or the SUPER OUT button is pressed.
