Basic Operation
3. Cleaning optical fiber
Clean optical fiber ribbon coating with alcohol-impregnated gauze or lint-free tissue
approximately 100mm from the tip. If the fibers are not cleaned properly, dust
particulates from the fiber ribbon coating surface can enter the protection sleeve and
might result in a future fiber break or attenuation increase.
4. Placing protection sleeve over fiber ribbon
Place the protection sleeve
over the fiber ribbon. The
sleeve will be shrunk down in
the tube heater after the splice
is complete.
5. When using fiber ribbon
5-1. Setting fiber in fiber holder
If there is some bend in the section about 100 mm from the ribbon end, straighten that
section by rubbing the ribbon with fingers.
There are two types of fiber holders; one for the left side and one for the right side. It is
necessary to place each holder so that the hinge of the fiber holder is towards the heater.
Open the lids of fiber holders and place the No.1 (typically blue) fiber near the hinge and
set it so that 24 ~ 35 mm of fiber protrudes from the holder end. Close the lids of fiber
holders.
• Use fiber holders designed for the number of fibers in the ribbon.
• When setting fiber in fiber holder, hold the fiber in place while closing the lid
of the fiber holder
.
