GLOSSARY-12
GLOSSARY
GLOSSARY
Throttle: A valve for regulating the supply of a fluid, usually air or an air/fuel mix, to an engine.
TI: Transistorized Ignition.
Timing: Relationship between spark plug firing and piston position usually expressed in crankshaft
degrees before (BTDC) or after (ATDC) top dead center of the compression stroke.
TKS: Throttle Kicker Solenoid.
Torque Converter: A device which by its design multiplies the torque in a fluid coupling between an
engine and transmission/transaxle.
TOT: Transmission Oil Temperature sensor. This term is now replaced by TFT.
TR: Transmission Range sensor indicates the gear range in which the automatic transmission is
operating, previously called MLP.
Transaxle: A device consisting of a transmission and axle drive gears assembled in the same case.
Compare “Transmission.”
Transmission: A device which selectively increases or decreases the ratio of relative rotation between
its input and output shafts. Compare “Transaxle.”
Trip: Trip is defined as engine running (following a key OFF, engine OFF period) and vehicle travel
during which the OBD l components and five of the system monitors are tested at least once.
TSB: Technical Service Bulletin.
TSS: Transmission Speed Sensor indicates rotational speed of the transmission turbine shaft.
TWC: Three Way Catalyst is a catalytic converter system that reduces levels of HC, CO and NOx.
TWC + OC: Three Way + Oxidation Catalytic Converter is a catalytic converter system that has both
Three Way Catalyst (TWC) and Oxidation Catalyst (OC). Usually secondary air is introduced between
the two catalysts.
Two Valve (2V): Two valves, one intake and one exhaust, per cylinder.
UB: Underbody, position of catalyst.
Valve: A device by which the flow of liquid, gas, vacuum or loose material in bulk may be started,
stopped or regulated by a movable parts opening, shutting or partially obstructing one or more parts or
passageways. A “Valve” is also the movable part of such a device.
VAF: Vane Air Flow. Now Volume Air Flow.
VAT: Vane Air Temperature.
VCC: Viscous Converter Clutch. Now Torque Converter Clutch/TCC.
VCRM: Variable Control Relay Module is a relay module that provides variable control of various EEC
components.
VDM: Vehicle Dynamics Module.
VECI Decal: Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal.
VIC: Virtual instrument Cluster.
