GLOSSARY-10
GLOSSARY
GLOSSARY
QSB: Quarterly Service Bulletin.
Quick Test: A functional diagnostic test of the EEC-V system consisting of vehicle preparation and
hookup, KOEO and KOER Self-Tests.
RABS: Rear Anti-Lock Brake System.
RAM: Random Access Memory. The PCM uses RAM to compute/compare operations processes.
RECAL: Calibration Adjustment.
REDOX: Reduction Oxidation Catalytic Converter is a catalytic converter system that is designed to
operate at dual temperatures. At low temperatures, it reduces levels of HC and CO. At high
temperatures, it reduces levels of HC, CO and NOx.
Relay: An electromechanical device in which connections in one circuit are opened or closed by
changes in another circuit.
RM: Relay Module is a module containing two or more relays.
ROM: Read Only Memory.
RPM: Revolutions Per Minute.
RTN: Return. A dedicated sensor ground circuit.
RWD: Rear Wheel Drive.
SAE: Society of Automotive Engineers.
SBDS: Service Bay Diagnostic System.
SC: Supercharged.
SCP: Standard Corporate Protocol is the multiplexing communication language used by Ford Motor
Company for communications between stand-alone modules and devices.
Secondary Air: Air provided to the exhaust system to improve catalyst efficiency.
Self-Test: A two minute engine-on test that identifies any concerns in the exhaust as recirculation,
secondary air and air/fuel ratio subsystems.
Sensor: The generic name for a device that senses either the absolute value or a change in a physical
quantity such as temperature, pressure or flow rate, and converts that change into an electrical signal.
SFI: Sequential Multi-Port Fuel Injection is a multi-port fuel delivery system in which each injector is
individually energized and timed relative to its cylinder intake event. Normally fuel is delivered to each
cylinder once per two crankshaft revolutions in four cycle engines and once per crankshaft revolution in
two cycle engines.
SFT: Short-Term Fuel Trim, injector control strategy.
SHO: Super High Output, engine designation.
Short Circuit: An undesirable connection between a circuit and any other point.
SIG RTN: Signal Return is a dedicated sensor ground circuit that is common to two or more sensors.
