Appendix C - GenLock
All versions of the HyperConverter can Gen-Lock to a black burst, active video or TTL level external
reference signal. Our usage of the word GenLock is the usage understood by professional Television
Engineers. The HyperConverter will lock Vertically, Horizontally and in color phase to the external
reference signal. All Overlay, Chroma-Key, mixing functions must be accomplished by additional
devices.
Although all models of the HyperConverter support GenLock as an internal feature, you must use the
HyperConverter with an appropriate cable to get at the GenLock function. Cables which provide this
feature exist for all 5 platform and connector configurations of the HyperConverter (PC, MAC, Sun,
SGI, Other BNC workstation). The GenLock cables provide an electrical pass through of the external
reference signal (i. e. the Gen-Lock signal is passed from one BNC connector to the other, without a
buffer amplifier or other intervening circuitry). You can obtain the GenLock feature with or without
component support. (Please see the next section.)
The suggested way to align GenLock is as follows:
Make sure that the HyperConverter provides a properly aligned picture with respect to an ordinary
television raster. (Since you have control over Horizontal and Vertical Size and Position, all 4 of these
parameters must be properly aligned with a television raster before attempting GenLock).
Adjust the GenLock Horizontal position for correct position of the converted video signal at the
mixing point.
Adjust the GenLock Color Phase for the correct color phase of the converter video signal at the mixing
point.
