Chapter 6: Service and Maintenance
Replacing the gas valve
Before You Begin
WARNING
Turn off all gas supply before performing any maintenance on the gas supply lines.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in bodily injury or death.
• Disconnect all power sources to the heater.
• Turn off the main gas supply.
To remove the gas valve:
1. Disconnect the gas valve wires from the controller.
2. Remove the supply line (3) from the input side of the gas valve (6).
3. Turn the gas valve 90 degrees toward the door of the heater.
4. With the appropriate tools, loosen the gas valve (3) from the pipe train assembly ensuring that no
other pipe train joints are loosened in the process.
To install the gas valve:
5. Look for the gas flow arrow on the side or bottom of the gas valve, and ensure that the arrow points
in the direction of the burner when installing.
6. Using either “pipe dope” or “thread tape” approved for use with gaseous fuels, install and tighten the
gas valve to the burner pipe train. (The valve should be vertical when done.)
7. Turn the pipetrain 90 degrees away from the door, until the input of the valve lines up with the rubber
pipe grommet of the heater housing.
8. Using either “pipe dope” or “thread tape” approved for use with gaseous fuels, install and tighten the
main gas supply to the gas valve.
9. Turn the main gas supply on.
10.Using a mist of “soapy” water, slightly spray all pipe component connections, and check for bubbling
of the soapy water, as it can indicate a gas leak.
11.If a leak is detected, loosen the joint where the leak is present, clean the threads, apply approved
thread tape or pipe dope, retighten the connection, and repeat the previous step.
12.Attach the black and red wires coming from the control box to the two terminals of the gas valve.

13.Turn on the power and gas supply.
