OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS – USING THE CONTROL HEAD
This section describes the operating procedures initiated and monitored from the Control Head.
For operation from a CRT/Keyboard refer to the appropriate section
INTRODUCTION
The Model 4000C Continuity Tester is designed for testing circuit continuities in harnesses,
cables, backplanes, and bare printed circuit boards. The Tester operations are controlled
internally by a microprocessor unit (MPU), which operates from a program stored in a read only
memory (ROM). Specific test point assignments and the scanning sequence for a circuit under
test are determined by a “learned” program stored in a 128k dynamic memory. Control
functions for the operator pertain to starting, operational mode selection, and monitoring. In the
basic system, operator controls and a display are located on the Control Head. Control and
monitoring functions may also be implemented through the optional CRT/Keyboard Terminal.

Learn Known Good
Before testing, it is necessary to prepare a program for the assembly to be tested. One method
is to use the LEARN KNOWN GOOD mode to create a wire list program automatically by
scanning a completed assembly and storing the continuities in memory. This requires
engagement of the ENABLE keyswitch on the Control Head. A complete programming
procedure using a known-good circuit is provided below.
1.
Insert key and rotate ENABLE switch to vertical position.
2.
Connect known-good harness through adapter interface to test connectors on rear panel.
3.
Press
KNOWN GOOD
to initiate Learn Known Good. The Model 4000C will scan the
connected circuit and store its configuration (wire List) in memory. After a few seconds
the Control Head display will show OK, accompanied by a momentary tone.
4.
If a printer is connected, press the arrow up or down repeatedly until PRINT WIRE LIST
is displayed.
5.
Press MENU RUN and a wire list will be printed. A sample wire list printout is provided
in Figure 6.
