5.9.3 Visibility from the steering position
It is easy to drive the boat in fair weather when the sea is calm, but always
remember to keep sufficient lookout (also a requirement of the COLREG rules).
Ensure maximum visibility from the steering position at all times by following these
guidelines:
•
Position crew and passengers so that they do not obstruct the helmsman's visibility.
•
Do not drive at the planing threshold speed for extended periods as the
raised bow blocks forward visibility.
•
Use the engine's trim function (power trim) and any trim tabs you may have
installed to adjust the bow so that visibility is not compromised.
•
Use the windshield wipers when necessary.
•
Also remember to look behind the boat, especially in fairways where fast
ships may overtake you. In narrow fairways it is always recommended to
give way to faster ships, especially if they cannot otherwise overtake you
safely because of limited space.
Use the navigation lights during darkness or when visibility is limited for any other
reason (such as fog or heavy rain).
5.10 Proper procedures: Further recommendations and guidelines
5.10.1 Protection from falling overboard and means of climbing back aboard
The locations of the boat's decks and swim steps are shown in Appendix 1,
Figure 6.
When the boat is in motion, do not sit, stand, or occupy any other area than the
seats shown in Appendix 1, Figure 6. If somebody falls overboard, it is easiest for
the person to climb back aboard using the swim steps attached to the transom. The
ladder can be angled down from within the water.
5.10.2 Life raft stowage
The Buster XXL, Cabin, Magnum, SuperMagnum, Magnum M5, and Magnum Pro
models have an area reserved specifically for storing a life raft. See Appendix 3.
5.10.3 Stowing of removable equipment
All heavy equipment, such as anchors, must be stowed securely before setting off.
Also remember that light objects can easily be caught up in the wind. Remember
to close the cabin door before departing so that the door does not slam shut
unintentionally.
