S8700 IP connect
Introduction
The S8700 IP-Connect configuration is intended for installation on a converged network
infrastructure, as opposed to the S8700 Multi-Connect configuration, which must be installed on
an isolated control network. There are many ways to connect the pieces of the S8700 Media
Server IP-Connect to the network, each providing specific advantages and disadvantages. This
section specifies some of the more common recommended configurations for the IP-Connect
solution.
Network connectivity between Avaya S8700 servers and port
networks
The S8700 IP-Connect configuration requires IP connectivity between S8700 Media Server
interfaces and Avaya media gateways. The port networks in an IP-Connect configuration use
IPSI cards in the port networks to communicate to the S8700 Media Server. This connection will
be referred to as the control connection throughout this document.
If the control between the media server and port network is lost, the media server will be unable
to provide call control, resulting in an unstable system. Although the S8700 Media Server
interfaces provide for denial of service (DoS) protection, they cannot affect the ability of the
network to successfully forward packets during a virus or worm attack or when the network
becomes unstable due to network outages or administrative errors.
In hybrid environments (IP and TDM endpoints and trunks), the incentive to minimize disruption
of the IP control connection is increased. By maintaining the control connection when other
network components have failed, TDM-connected endpoints can continue to function.
