being used (as opposed to a center stage), each interport network call requires two TDM
resources and two media processing resources. One of each of these resources is supplied by
each of the PNs that is involved in the call. In the preceding discussion, everything that applies
to a PN also applies to a Media Gateway.
In general, the TDM and media processing requirements for intersite calls are accounted for
somewhat differently than the requirements for intrasite calls. Throughout this discussion, we
assume that shuffling is implemented. When an IP endpoint is involved in an intersite call, it
induces no TDM or media processing usage in its own site beyond the resources that are
initially required for the call set-up process, regardless of the nature of the far-end party. On the
other hand, when a circuit-switched endpoint (including PSTN trunks) is involved in an intersite
call, one TDM resource and one media processing resource are required from the port network
or Media Gateway to which it is administered, regardless of the nature of the far-end party.
