6. MODULATIONS
The original Casio CZ-101 did not offer much in the way of controlling parameters
dynamically in real time. But the Modulations tab of the Arturia CZ V is loaded with features
and concepts that were found only in the most massive modular analog synthesizers of
the day. These include a 16-by-16 modulation matrix that can connect any of the 24 mod
sources to any of the 51 mod destinations, highly configurable LFOs, and synchronization
capabilities. The Modulations tab is the perfect combination of power and possibility, and
yet it is very simple to use.
6.1. Modulation matrix
The left half of the Modulations page displays the modulation matrix. A modulation matrix is
basically a software "patch bay" that allows you to route one or more sources to one or more
destinations. The CZ V offers 16 sets of modulation routings on two different tabs labeled
"1-8" and "9-16", with 8 mod routings available per tab. Here’s an example of a simple routing
that assigns the modulation wheel to the vibrato depth, and each of the four Macro faders
to a separate effect level:
The modulation sources we’ve selected are listed on the left side (row headers) and the
modulation destinations we’ve selected are listed along the top (column headers). The blue
boxes show the connection and level of modulation from a source to a destination.
♪
: Noticed that we've labeled the four MACROS below the matrix with the names of the effects we're
controlling. Simply type in those fields to rename the faders; they don't get named automatically.
