more or less “brilliant”, more or less “dampened”.
This is the type of filtering that you will find more often than not on synthesizers that use subtrac-
tive synthesis. It can be found on most of the recent analog and digital synthesizers.

The high-pass (high-pass filter or HPF), as opposed to the low-pass, eliminates low
frequencies and only allows high frequencies past. The sound will thus become
“thinner”. It is very useful for removing redundant low frequencies.

The band-pass (band-pass filter or BPF) eliminates the frequencies situated on ei-
ther side of the cut-off frequency. Use it to make a certain band of frequencies that
you wish to emphasize appear. This will make the sound more “pinched”.
