APPENDIX B - UPGRADING FROM OLDER FIRMWARE REVISIONS

If the existing software in your Model 25 is an older version (for example, revision 1.7 or
1.8), there are several additional steps that need to be performed while upgrading the
software. You should use the following procedure in these cases. One of the ways to confirm
that you should be using this procedure is the presence of an IC in socket U6.

OBSERVE STATIC DISCHARGE PRECAUTIONS!

1.

Remove power from the encoder. Remove the encoder from the console. Open the
encoder to expose the encoder digital board (see “DISASSEMBLY AND CIRCUIT
LOCATION” on page 33).

2.

Move the jumper JP4 to the “B” position. JP4 is located on the Encoder board (702-
0312), just below the socket for U7.

3.

Remove the IC in socket U6 and leave the socket empty. Please be careful not to bend the
pins on the IC. This device may be damaged by static so avoid touching the pins.

4.

Install the new decoder IC for the Model 25 in socket U18. U18 is located on the Digital
Encoder board.

5.

Carefully, and without bending their pins, remove the old 28 pin EPROMs from sockets
U5and U7 of the encoder board (702-0312). These devices may be damaged by static so
avoid touching their pins.

6.

Place the new EPROMs, labeled U5 and U7, into the sockets with the corresponding
labels.

CAUTION

These devices must be oriented in the proper direction or they will be destroyed.
The notch in one end of the device must match the notch in the destination socket.
The notch must face the top of the digital encoder board. Be sure that the pins of the
EPROMs do not bend out or under when the devices are pressed into their sockets.

7.

Once you are certain that the EPROMs have been properly installed, you may reassemble
the encoder. Before reinstalling, you may wish to verify proper installation by applying
power and watching for the display segment test. If the encoder does not execute the
power-on test, or if the power-on test fails, then it is likely that the EPROMs are
improperly installed.
