COPPER STRIP THERMAL APPLICATIONS
Thermal management is an important part of integrating the DVR-23 board into a system.
The minimum and maximum operating temperatures must be respected at all times, so the system designer
needs to implement ways to remove the heat from the DVR and dissipate it elsewhere in the environment.
Different operating environments will require different thermal management solutions.
For example, indoors open air applications typically all that is required is unimpeded air flow.
More challenging situations may require stronger thermal solutions.
For example, operating in a sealed enclosure will require some means to remove heat from the inside of the
enclosure.
To help with the thermal management, the DVR-23 may optionally include an adhesive copper strip placed
between the CPU and the heat sink. This copper strip, part number PH3-101.6-25.4-0.21-1A from t-Global
Technology, is meant to help transport heat from the CPU to a heat sink.
One end of the copper strip is adhesive and is attached to the processor chip, the other end of the strip
should be attached to the heat sinking device. Attaching the copper strip to a heat sinking device will likely
- but not certainly - help manage the heat generated by the DVR and improve the usable temperature range.
A typical situation where the thermal tape can help is when the DVR is in a sealed metal enclosure.
The tape can be attached to the interior wall of the enclosure, while the external side of the wall can be
cooled with forced air or a Peltier device.
The copper strip is optional and can be removed with no consequences as long as the thermal constraints
specified are obeyed.
