Shimming / Backlash

3.

Install the special service tools so that it
pushes against the propeller shaft, and
then turn the lower unit 90° to the upside
position.

NOTE:

While turning the drive shaft clockwise 5–6
times so that the forward gear taper roller
bearing is seated evenly, tighten the center
bolt

to the specified torque.

Install the backlash indicator onto the
drive shaft (20.0 mm [0.79 in] in diame-
ter), then install the dial gauge onto the
lower unit as shown.

NOTE:

Install the dial gauge so that the plunger

comes in contact with the mark

on the

backlash indicator.

5.

While pushing the drive shaft slightly, turn
the drive shaft slowly clockwise and
counterclockwise, then measure the
backlash when the drive shaft stops in
each direction.
