2.5.3 Termination Requirements
A 50 ohm BNC terminator is used to terminate a network segment and block electrical interference on
the network. T w o types of 50 ohm terminators are used on a network segment: a grounded BNC
terminator, and a non-grounded BNC terminator, widely available from industry suppliers. The
following considerations apply:
• A terminator must be attached to each end of a trunk segment cable, even if there is a
repeater present.
One (and only one) terminator on each trunk segment cable must be grounding-type
terminator, which is used to properly ground the network. The other terminator must be a
non-grounding terminator.
• S p l i c e s using barrel connectors should be kept to a minimum. Use unspliced cable lengths
wherever possible. T h e fewer splices you make in your network, the more reliable it will be.
2.6 S O F T W A R E CONSIDERATIONS
The Ethernet Module uses the National Semiconductor NS83901 Ethernet controller chip. Software
and drivers compatible with this chip or compatible with the Novell NEI000A Ethernet interface will
operate with the Ethernet Module.
2.6.1 U s i n g Network Operating Systems
The
most common method of using the Ethernet Module in a network installation is by means of a
"network operating system." I n some cases the network operating system is part of the computer's
operating system; in other cases (as with
DOS)
the network operating system is provided separately.
One example of a network operating system for DOS is Novell's Netware, which supports server-client
communications. That is to say, a central computer that runs NetWare as its network operating system
provides file server and network services to the distributed systems connected to the LAN.
2.6.2 U s i n g NetBIOS
NetBIOS can be used with a variety of LAN hardware, providing a standardized software interface to
network applications. T h e network application does not have to concern itself with hardware
parameters, such as network addresses or interrupt assignments, and therefore can be highly portable.
Nodes can be referred to by name rather than by complicated network address assignments, and high-
level commands can be given, which simplifies application development.
