System battery life is less than expected how can I improve this?
First, try using the BIOS setup defaults in the Power Management setup screen. To access this, type <
Ctrl> < Alt> P at the DOS prompt and select options to the factory default setting. You should then save
these settings and return to DOS. At the DOS prompt, type
POWER.
This program will tell you if the
advanced power management functions have been turned on. The normal response will be:[SX/DX 9-6]
Power Management Status
--------------------------------
Setting=ADV:MAX
CPU: idle 80% of time.
If this command indicates that the Power Management driver is not loaded, you should check to see if
this file was loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file on the hard disk. Your WinBook is shipped with this
function enabled to prolong battery life. For more information, type
HELP POWER
at the DOS prompt.
COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS
My internal fax/modem is not working correctly, how can I correct this?
Be sure your software is correctly set up using COM3 as the modem device. Most software packages
come pre-configured to use COM1 or COM2. The WinBook uses COM2 for the internal trackball and
COM3 for the fax/modem interface. You must set your communications software package appropriately.
Note that all applications which ship with the WinBook (e.g. the Windows Terminal program) come
pre-configured with the modem at COM3.
TRACKBALL PROBLEMS
Why is the trackball cursor movement no longer smooth and feels as if it is not tracking correctly?
The trackball may become dirty due to hand oils or other contaminants. It is recommended that routine
cleaning be done on this. Please refer to section 9 for details of the cleaning procedure.
Note also that in Windows there is also a facility to change the mouse speed and visibility that allows you
to tailor the trackball performance to your tastes. The utility is located in the Main menu folder and is
titled Control Panel, double click on the Control Panel icon and then double click on the Mouse icon.
You can then use the slide controls to change the sensitivity of the trackball and switches.[SX/DX 9-7]
LCD panels, due to their slower response times, sometimes present a problem locating the cursor. The
Windows Control Panel for mouse utility provides a useful option that can help reduce this problem.
Many notebook users also prefer to turn on the Mouse Trails option (simply click on the box labeled
Trails in the Mouse setup window) since it helps keep track of the cursor particularly when moving
rapidly across the screen.
