CLEANING THE 486SX/DX-WINBOOK SX/DX
You may use a slightly damp cloth to clean the plastic shell of the system. Take great care that no liquid
enters between any of the seams of the shell or into any of the connectors.
Glass cleaner may be used to clean the LCD screen. Do not spray cleaner onto the screen, however, but
rather dampen a soft, clean cloth and gently rub the screen. Do not let any liquid run between the LCD
and the surrounding frame.
WinBook Trackball Cleaning Instructions
With all trackball type devices, there is a routine maintenance involved. This maintenance involves
cleaning both the outer and inner working components.
The problem lies with the trackball surface being exposed and constantly touched by fingertips.
Everyone’s skin contains oils that stick to the surface of the trackball making it a “dirt magnet”, pulling
dust and grime down into the trackball rollers.
To clean the inner components, the user will have to remove the retainment ring and the ball to gain
access to the inside of the assembly. To do this, follow the instructions below:
1. Insert a paper clip, safety pin or other small printed object into one of the two holes located on the
retainment ring which surrounds the ball (NOT the rectangular holes below the trackball
assembly!). Refer to the illustration 9-1.
2. Turn the retainment ring counter-clockwise. Once the holes move from the 12/6 o’clock positions
to the 9/3 o’clock positions, the retainment ring should pop up allowing the user to remove the ring
and ball.
3. Once the ring and ball are removed, the user should notice two tiny rollers, one at 3 o’clock and
the other at 6 o’clock, within the “pit” where the trackball is held.
4. To clean the assembly, take a foam Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol to each of the rollers. [SX/DX
9-2]
5. After thoroughly cleaning the rollers, take a soft, lint-free cloth and hot water and wipe the ball and
the “pit” clean.
6. Having followed the steps outlined above, the trackball assembly should be reassembled this is
done by replacing the ball and the retainment ring. Turn the retainment ring clockwise to tighten.
