Figure 6 - X-Ray Scanner Operating Principle

The primary beam of X-rays is very narrow and located in the center of the scanner. The center of the tunnel is where
the X-ray beam is most intense. Closer to the ends of the tunnel there is scattered radiation, which is much less
intense. At the ends of the tunnel, the protective curtains prevent this scattered radiation from exiting. The metal
shrouds serve the dual purpose of preventing someone from reaching inside the tunnel and preventing any radiation
that escapes out from the curtains from scattering further.

X-rays are only produced when power is supplied to the X-ray generator. Generating X-rays only occurs if the
following conditions are met:

The scanner must be powered on

l

The operator key must be turned to the ON position

l

An operator must be logged in

l

The access panels must be closed and locked (this is detected by interlock switches)

l

The operator must be standing on the pressure-sensitive mat (optional)
