13. LEAD BATTERIES (PB)
a) General Information
Lead acid batteries are completely different to NiMH or NiCd batteries. Despite their high
capacity they can only provide low currents. The charging process is also different.
The charging current for lead batteries must not exceed 1/10 (1/10C) of the battery
capacity. For a 5000 mAh lead battery (5 Ah) the charging current must be set to no more
than 0.5 A (500 mA).
It is not permitted to rapidly charge lead acid batteries, as this would overload
the battery! Danger of explosion and fire!
Also always observe the information printed on the battery or the information
provided by the battery manufacturer on the permitted charging current.
b) Charging Batteries („CHARGE“)
• In the main menu, select the „PB“ charge program with the button „BATT TYPE/STOP“.
• Press the button „START/ENTER“; the display shows the following, for example:
The value on the left in the second line shows the charging current, the value on the
right shows the voltage or number of cells of the battery (in this example, a 6-cell lead
battery, 6x 2.0 V = 12.0 V).
• If the values need to be changed, push the „START/ENTER“ button. The charge current
flashes. Change the charging current using the keys „INC“ and „DEC“ and confirm the
value using the „START/ENTER“ key.
• The voltage/cell number then begins to flash. Change this using the buttons „INC“ and
„DEC“. Observe that the voltage is only changed by the number of cells (e.g. one cell =
2.0 V, two cells = 4.0 V, etc.). Confirm the setting by pressing the „START/ENTER“
button.
