ATOMIZER SIDEWALL LAYOUT EXAMPLE FOUR
Example:
The size of this example area is 30 ft (9.15 m)
wide x 40 ft (12.20 m) long x 24 ft (7.32 m) high and is
detailed in Figure 10.

STEP NO. 1 – DETERMINE THE GROSS VOLUME OF
THE ROOM
For sidewall applications, the number of atomizers required
will be based on the gross volume of the room and
maximum spacing requirements. Because of the orientation
of the atomizers, floor area is not a factor in the design.
The volume is calculated by multiplying width 30 ft (9.15 m)
x length 40 ft (12.20 m) x hazard height of 24 ft (7.32 m)
which equals 28,800 ft
3
(815.5 m
3
).
This hazard does not exceed the maximum hazard volume
of 36,730 ft
3
(1040 m
3
).
STEP NO. 2 – DETERMINE THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF
ATOMIZERS REQUIRED
To determine the number of atomizers required, divide the
gross volume of the room by the rated volume per atomizer,
3,673 ft
3
(104 m
3
).
The gross volume is 28,800 ft3 (815.5 m
3
) divided by the
rated volume per atomizer of 3,673 ft
3
(104 m
3
) which
equals 7.84 atomizers. Round up to the nearest whole
number of 8 atomizers.
STEP NO. 3 – VERIFY ATOMIZER ARRAY PLACEMENT
Sketch the locations and verify spacing requirements of all
atomizers using the appropriate array. Additional atomizers
may be required if the spacing limitations are exceeded.
To determine the appropriate atomizer placement, refer to
the “General Information” section of this manual. There are
four different cases to choose from for sidewall mounted
atomizers. In this particular example, there is a ceiling
height greater than 16.5 ft (5 m) and an opposing wall
distance greater than 33 ft (10 m). Therefore, half of the
atomizers must be in the upper half of the room and half of
the atomizers must be in the lower half of the room. The
upper atomizers must be at least 3 ft (0.9 m) from the
ceiling, the lower atomizers must be at least 6 ft 8 in. (2.0
m) above the floor, and atomizers on opposing walls may
be aimed directly at one another. See Figure 9d of Section
2.
In this example, discharging the atomizers down the length
of the room is preferred because four atomizers can be
placed on each wall and aimed directly at each other.
