Troubleshooting
To troubleshoot possible detector and chromatographic system problems, use the information
in this chapter. The information is organized in a table of symptoms, possible causes, and
remedies (see
Table 7 ). Because many of the problems attributed to the detector might
actually be due to other components in the chromatographic system, the table also includes
references and potential solutions to these types of problems. To aid in troubleshooting errors,
Table 8 lists some common error messages and numeric codes.

Symptom Cause Remedy
Spikes on baseline Continuous gas bubbles in the
flow cell
Degas the mobile phase. Connect a backpressure device to the
flow cell (check backpressure rating).
Immiscible solvent bubbles
following mobile phase
changeover Flush the flow cell with 2-propanol and then with mobile
phase.
Electrical interference Check the electrical lines for good connections, interference
from broadcast radiation, or both. Check for ground loops.
Extremely large voltage
fluctuations in line power Remove systems that cause voltage fluctuations, for example,
ovens; isolate the detector to a “quiet” circuit; or use an
uninterruptible power supply (UPS) that is safety certified for
your country (UL, TÜV, SEMKO, DEMKO, and so on).
Ambient light Install the flow cell cover. You must install the flow cell cover
before turning the power on. Never remove it when you are
acquiring data.
